Greenham Common Control Tower

Greenham Common Observation Deck
Greenham Common Control Tower

Learn about the fascinating history of Greenham Common from the unique viewpoint of one of the few remaining airfield buildings. Greenham Control Tower was recently refurbished and opened in Summer 2018 as a visitor centre, museum, community hub, and café, all run by volunteers from the local community.

The centre shares the story of Greenham Common, promoting the four key themes of the Military and Cold War History of Greenham Common, the Social History of Greenham Common, the Role of Protest in Society, and Nature Conservation and Wildlife. One of its key features is the observation deck, where you can enjoy a very special panoramic view across the common. Let your imagination run wild and envisage what the scene might have looked like in the 1940s when it was used as an airfield by the Royal Air Force and United States Army Air Forces during the Second World War, or in subsequent decades when it was used by the United States Air Force during the Cold War.

The Control Tower really is a must-visit attraction, only 2.5 miles from Newbury town centre and surrounded by spectacular walking routes both within Greenham and Crookham Commons, and at nearby Bowdown Woods.
