Krazy Races Soapbox Derby Hits Newbury This Year

The UK’s largest touring Soapbox Derby is coming to Newbury this summer, and the search is on for 40 fearless teams ready to race for glory! Krazy Races will take over the town on August Bank Holiday weekend (Sunday 24th August 2025), in partnership with Newbury Business Improvement District (BID).

A free-to-attend, award-winning event, Krazy Races brings wild, wacky races to towns and cities across the UK, all while raising vital funds for local charities.

In 2024 alone, Krazy Races events attracted over 100,000 visitors and raised tens of thousands for good causes across the country. Celebrity competitors, including Maya Jama, YouTuber Chunkz, and stars from The Real Housewives of Cheshire, have joined the fun. Last year, Blue Peter filmed a special episode at one of the Krazy Races events, showcasing the excitement of the derby.

Krazy Races is now on the lookout for 40 local teams to take on the challenge in Newbury.

The event sees a mixture of individual, charity and business teams design, build and then race their handcrafted soap box in front of up to 20,000 locals.

Newbury Krazy Races will be the first of its kind to be held in the town. The racing route will feature chicanes, obstacles, and thrilling twists and turns.

Alongside the thrilling races, Krazy Races aims to collaborate with local stakeholders and businesses to bring entertainers, food stalls, and other attractions, ensuring a memorable day for families. Krazy Races has worked with major partners across the country, including theatres, manufacturers, car dealers, educational institutes, and even Premier League club Wolverhampton Wanderers. Organisers are hoping to work with businesses of all sizes in Newbury and the surrounding areas.

Newbury Business Improvement District (BID) has teamed up with Sarah Belcher Events Limited, the organisers of Krazy Races, to bring this unique event to Newbury after the tremendous success of their previous events, and will be working closely with the team on and leading up to the event.

Danny Scoffin, Head of Brand & Strategic Development for Krazy Races, said:

“I’m thrilled to kick off the new year by announcing Krazy Races in Newbury! We can’t wait to bring this exciting event to the town and collaborate with local businesses. Over the years, we’ve seen incredible soapboxes, and we’re excited to see the creativity that Newbury’s residents and businesses will bring to the race. We would like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to our event partners, Newbury BID for welcoming us and making this event a reality. We look forward to seeing everyone on Sunday 24th August!”

Newbury BID commented:

“Newbury BID is delighted to partner with Krazy Races to bring this thrilling new event to our historic market town this summer. As a spiritual successor to the much-loved Newbury Crafty Craft race, we warmly invite local businesses to join in the fun and showcase their incredible soapbox creations. We can’t wait to see the community come together for what promises to be an unforgettable day!”

Applications for teams to enter open today, with event organisers looking for a maximum of 40 teams to enter the race in a knockout style competition with multiple trophies and prizes. Teams and spectators are encouraged to raise as much money as possible for charity, and later this year, the event will announce its official Newbury Krazy Races headline charity.
