Head down the alleyway between Cote Brasserie and The Cutting Bar in Newbury town centre, walk for a short way along Northcroft Lane (pick up a coffee and burrito from Fusion Deli as you pass if you fancy a picnic!), and discover two glorious parks sat either side of the tree-lined street.
Goldwell Park, to the right, has a fascinating history (check out the information boards on the walkway alongside the park!), and the views across Newbury and beyond from the top of the park are simply stunning. Pause for breath on a bench (you may need to after walking up the hill!) and take in your lush surroundings. The grand house on the hill to your left was once the proud owner of the grounds that now make up Goldwell Park, and recently a new area of young trees has been planted to further improve the park’s environment. The lower section of the park is home to a children’s play area, BMX facilities, and even a zip slide! You can pick up the beautiful Speen Moors circular walking route from a track next to Goldwell Park.
Northcroft Park, to the left, is home to outdoor football and cricket pitches, as well as the Newbury Real Ale Festival each September and other popular events and activities throughout the year. Northcroft Leisure Centre is next to the park and includes a fabulous outdoor lido, which opens during the summer months. Venture a little further along behind the leisure centre and you’ll discover a magical weir, perfect for taking off your socks and shoes and dangling your feet in the water. The nearby Monkey Bridge can take you across the canal to pick up walking and cycling routes along the tow path back into town or further afield.
