On Saturday 19th September, Charles I returns to Newbury after 383 years, to mark the day before the fateful First Battle of Newbury.
Head along to Newbury Market Place where the Newbury Town Cryer will be heralding the King’s return to Newbury, and you’ll have the chance to meet King Charles I, Queen Mary, and Royalist and Parliamentarian troops, all be dressed in accurate period clothing.
The event is being put on by reenactors from The Marquess of Winchester Regiment, English Civil War Society and the Essex Regiment, who will be eager to share details on what happened in Newbury on the eve of the biggest Civil War battle in the south of England.
You’ll have the chance to take photos with the King and Queen and there are a few scenes planned, most notably outside the Town Hall at midday, where Parliament troops will be talking to the Mayor, and an officer will then arrive to arrest the King and Queen!
The event coincides with Newbury Town Hall being open to the public from 10am-2pm as part of the national Heritage Open Days campaign.
