Cycling

Newbury
RG14 5AA
N/A

Cycling is a great way to see our beautiful district. As well as three National Cycle Network routes that connect Newbury and West Berkshire with neighbouring areas, there’s a host of quiet lanes and tracks to explore.

If you’d like to join other cyclists on rides across the district and wider, and be part of a great cycling community, West Berkshire Spokes is free to join and organises Saturday rides twice a month between March and October.

Spokes also has monthly get-togethers and actively works with other organisations including the Canal & River Trust and West Berkshire Council to deliver cycling infrastructure improvements. Affiliated to Cycling UK and linked in with British Cycling’s Let’s Ride scheme, Spokes has also negotiated 10% off new bikes and parts at participating local bike shops for their members.

If you’d like to try out a route yourself or with a friend, Spokes have developed several recreational routes. Along with the Newbury and Thatcham cycle map developed by West Berkshire Council, these can be downloaded from the WBC website here.

For visitors coming to Newbury from further afield, National Cycle Network Route 4 runs east-west across our district, alongside and parallel to the lovely Kennet & Avon Canal, linking through to London and Reading in the east and Bath, Bristol and Wales to the west. For those who want to cycle a shorter distance, Route 4 parallels the railway through our district, so it’s easy to book a space and then let the train take the strain after you’ve finished your ride.

West Berkshire is also linked in to the National Cycle Network:
• at Beech Hill by Route 23 (Reading-Basingstoke-Winchester-Southampton) and;
• at Kintbury by Route 246 which also passes through Inkpen village en route to the Test Valley.

Experienced road cyclists may also want to join Newbury Road Club or alternatively Newbury Velo which each offer faster club rides and specific group rides on-road. Local cycle shop Banjo Cycles, based in Hambridge Road in Newbury, also organise a regular programme of rides.
