With some cafés and pubs thrown in for good measure…

From revived vegan brunches, yummy veggie lunches and meatless meals for dinner, we’ve rounded up Newbury’s best vegan foodie spots to help you on your plant-based journey…

P.S. Take a look at our Vegan Town Trail Map, to discover where you can find all of the below and more, right here in Newbury!

The invention of vegan mozzarella really is a thing of dreams. If turning vegan meant no more pizza, we’d really be struggling. Thank goodness that Newbury’s family-favourite, Lusso, provides us with all the vegan pizza pleasure we could ever want or need. Post-pizza? Donut worry…There are plenty of vegan-friendly options and sorbets available, with dairy-free milks for hot drinks to finish off!

Find me: 11 Weavers Walk, Northbrook Street, Newbury RG14 1AL

The downside of heading into Newbury’s latest sweet-tooth satisfying venture, The Sweet Box, is that you will want to try every beautifully decorated and amply-filled treat in sight. The vegan cakes on offer here vary almost daily, meaning that there is always something new to try while resisting the temptation to binge.

Cross Keys is an independently owned pub that has absolutely nailed their chosen ‘dia de los muertos’ themed decor. Oozing with style, this newly renovated venue was taken over by new management in the height of Covid, and has upped its menu game to include pizzas, sharing boards, burgers and loaded pitta breads with vegan and veggie options to choose from.

Classic breakfast and brunch has gone vegan at this cosy little spot at Inch’s Yard. From vegan full English to fruit compote with homemade muesli, grab a blanket and make yourself at home in their cosy outdoor seating area. The Flower Pot also offers delicious vegan smoothies and sweet treats to enjoy on the go or dining in.

A nation-wide favourite, Bill’s revived vegan meals won’t disappoint! Taking eggs-ellent brunch to a whole new level (or shall we say, ‘eggless-llent’), Bill’s has teamed up with the world’s first vegan egg innovation: OGGS®. Made from chickpea protein, Scrambled OGGS® has already scooped food industry awards for best Innovation and flavour taking the title “World’s Best Egg Alternative”. Pop in to try it here first, with vegan full English breakfasts and vegan eggs on toast already proving to be insanely popular!

Lettuce taco about Mexican food…How does ‘chilli non carne’ and chipotle jackfruit loaded fries float your boat? Or spicy mixed veg burrito stuffed with vegan beer beans, ‘Violife’ cheese, and allll the vegan sauce you could possibly want? Well, you can find it here, and then some, at The Lion.  Not only does this indie pub offer a menu that’s bursting with flavoursome Mexican dishes and vegan beers, but it is probably one of the most extensive in Newbury.

This year, Caffe Nero has partnered with THIS to broaden its plant-based offering with new delicious items on the menu. ‘Sausage’ Ciabatta for breaky or ‘Chicken’ Arrabbiata Panini for lunch, either can be served with a good helping of vegan cake, and washed down with your diary-free hot drink of choice!

Tofu Pad Thai with Vegetable Tempura… We’re in! And we haven’t even got to the juicy sides and starters. We love their golden little nuggets of wild mushroom, tofu, sweet corn, chestnut, and glass noodle, deep fried in pastry and served with sweet chilli sauce. All mains come with the option of ‘veg and tofu’ to go plant-based, meaning you can still enjoy all your usual Thai favourites.

Dirty. Pretty. Vegans.  And don’t get us started on the burgers!  7Bone truly know how to do burgers better than most. Our favourite, the ‘p no bj’, consists of a vegan patty, miso peanut butter, crispy fried onion, facon lardons and chilli jam. We are also obsessed with their Kung Fu Fries, loaded with sriracha mayo, gochujang, sesame seeds, crispy and spring onions. We don’t know what half of it means but it sure does taste good.

Another truly delicious Thai restaurant in Newbury! Make sure you try the mixed veg starter, as it offers a generous helping of everything from traditional Thai spring rolls, crispy tofu, corn fritters, vegetable tempura and vegetable satay, and then the choice of mains is endless! From a Massaman (a peanut-based curry from southern Thailand), Pad Kaprow (a Chilli and Basil Stir-Fry), or a Pad Thai with added Tofu, you can’t go wrong! If you’re still hungry, you’re spoiled for choice with five fully-vegan side dishes.

Choose between the Vegan Roast, stuffed with vegan ‘turkey’ and the classic cranberry, port and thyme, or (and we love the name of this one) The Mooless Moo, consisting of jackfruit ‘steak’, craft ale and a black pepper sauce. All pies can be served as, what The Catherine Wheel like to call, ‘The Vegan Mothership’. We’re talking vegan mash, crispy shallots, vegan cheese and gravy… the lot. If you’re feeling particularly ravenous, we recommend a side of vegan smoky beans, too.

Many of Mr. Moo Juice’s  shakes and smoothies can be made diary-free. With over thirty delightful thirst-wrenching drinks on offer, it really is impossible to choose which one is best. Pizza Express show they really are the experts when it comes to plant-powered pizza. Not only do they offer over 15 different varieties of vegan pizzas, but they’ve done their research when sourcing their vegan mozzarella, too. Made from rice water,  the company dedicated a whole load of research to find something that melted similar to normal mozzarella, as we all know part of the enjoyment of pizza is that melted-cheese gooey goodness.
