We’re backing Keep Britain Tidy’s largest litter picking campaign- the Great British Spring Clean- and are asking you to get involved.
Running until Sunday 13th June, the Great British Spring Clean encourages towns, businesses and residents up and down the UK to contribute towards Keep Britain Tidy’s pledge to remove one million miles of litter from our streets, parks, and beaches.
There’s no doubt that cleaning up the country won’t be easy; the situation was seemingly only exacerbated by the pandemic, as thousands of non-biodegradable masks and harmful rubber gloves have since added to the waste cluttering our towns. But while the challenge at hand may be large, we can all play our part by starting small, right here in Newbury.
With this in mind, we’re inviting you to retrace the steps of your long- and often lonely- lockdown walks, litter picker in hand, to give back to the place that provided a source of comfort during the pandemic, and a sense of freedom and escape from lockdown.
Litter pickers and equipment for clean-ups is available on loan from West Berkshire Council, and we encourage you to contact West Berkshire Council customer services to arrange to borrow the equipment to get involved. Details for this can be found below.
Additionally, Newbury Town Council has several community clean up initiatives taking place each weekend of the campaign. You can find out about an upcoming clean up near you by following our Visit Newbury Facebook page.
Alison Drummond, our Operations Manager, is determined to get as many people involved as possible.
We all have that one place we found solace in during the pandemic. Be it Victoria Park, Northcroft Park, Goldwell Park, Greenham Common, or perhaps elsewhere- there was somewhere special to go for our dose of local exercise.
She adds:
We ask you to give back to those areas of natural beauty, or the streets that line our historic market town, by cleaning up the mess we left behind, many lockdowns ago.
