Giant puppets in the form of colour-changing musical lips are set to visit Newbury town centre for three singalong spectacles on Saturday 23rd April.
‘The Lips’ deliver a contemporary mix of art and theatre produced and directed by creative puppet company, Puppets with Guts. Performances reanimate and celebrate songs from popular music culture, such as ‘It’s Raining Men’, ‘I’m So Excited’, ‘Single Ladies’ and ‘Spice Up Your Life’ to name but a few, through a magical mixtape of lip-syncing as you have never seen before.
Originally from Bristol and regulars at Brighton Pride and Pop-Up London Festival, demand for the bold and gutsy puppet company has taken them all over the world. Performing at public events, shows, and concerts, the puppets are no strangers to the film, theatre, and TV industry, either.
Stand-out performances include the 2012 Olympics, a concert for Sir Paul McCartney, the theatre adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s ‘War Horse’, and the Harry Potter film series: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
We’re encouraging visitors from across the region to take advantage of this rare opportunity to see ‘The Lips’ in action for free in a rural market town, while making the most of the Spring sun and enjoying food and drink from the wonderful array of independent cafes, pubs, and restaurants on offer in Newbury.
Performances of ‘The Lips’ are set to take place at 2pm, 4pm, and 9:15pm, courtesy of our new partnership with 101 Outdoor Arts, part of the Corn Exchange.
Alison Drummond, our Operations Manager, said:
We are extremely fortunate to secure these spectacular displays of giant musical puppetry for Newbury and are grateful to be working with 101 Outdoor Arts, part of the Corn Exchange, to deliver a day of performances for all to enjoy in the town centre.
We hope that visitors and local residents make a day of seeing the shows here in Newbury by taking advantage of the fabulous independent businesses, both hospitality and retail, we have on offer!
Danielle Corbishley, Head of 101 & Outdoor Programmes, Corn Exchange, added:
At the Corn Exchange, we absolutely love putting on shows in Newbury's public spaces. Over the last 10 years, in partnership with Greenham Trust, we have been able to develop an outdoor programme for Newbury that has brought some of the world's best acrobats, puppeteers and performers to our beloved town centre.
This Easter we are pleased to be working closely with Newbury BID to bring another spectacular show to town - The LIPS by Puppets with Guts, which will be enjoyed by people of all ages. Come along and join this BIG lip-sync show!
