DESCRIPTION:Heritage Open Days is England’s largest festival of history and culture. It’s your chance to see hidden places and try out new experiences – and it’s all free. \nCorn Exchange Newbury reopened the Old Library earlier in 2026 having repurposed and refurbished this wonderful local heritage building. The Old Library has now become a vibrant and flexible arts hub for the local community and is now officially open for workshops\, classes and performances. \nLocal historian and former Librarian Sue Ellis will guide you round the building and talk about its history \, the inner workings of the library and tell some interesting tales. You will also see the new performance and community spaces and hear about what goes on in the building now. \nThe Old Library Café Bar will be open before and after the tour from 9.30am – 12pm for you to sit back and take in the space with some delicious refreshments.

The tour will included access to the gatehouse which is normally closed to the public. \nThe tours will last approx 30 minutes and take place on Satuday 12th September at 2:00pm\, 2:30 pm \,3:00 pm and 3:30 pm. \nBooking is essential as spaces are limited on the tours. £2 parking charge applies to non-members.

It’s your chance to see hidden places and try out new experiences – and it’s all free. \nHead along to to celebrate 20 years of Shaw House being open to the public! Shaw House will be FREE of charge to visit on the Heritage Open Days. Explore the newly dressed historical rooms\, our ‘Dressed for Shaw’ costume exhibition\, and the newly developed gardens. The English Civil War arms and armoury exhibition ‘Dressed for Battle’ will be open. Younger visitors can enjoy crafts in theActivity Room and playing outside in the playpark\, NEW for 2026. \nAreas of the House that are not usually accessible will be open including the ‘forbidden corridor’ on the second floor and the basement tunnel. During the day there will be introductory talks available in the Great Hall which will provide the perfect start to your visit. \nVisitors can also pre-book to visit to the Elizabethan bake house which was discovered during restoration and is one of the very special features of Shaw House. \nThe café will be open and alternative areas for seating will be provided.

This includes the Town Hall Honours Boards\, which list the Mayors of Newbury\, going back to 1596 and features many well-known local families. \nAlthough meetings in the Town Hall are open to the public\, and there are often coffee mornings and other community events in the Chamber\, it appears there are still a lot of Newbury people who have not visited the Chamber. \nThe event is FREE\, including refreshments\, and all are welcome.

This rare opportunity offers access to a normally closed part of the site\, with knowledgeable guides sharing the history and stories behind this unique building. \nGreenham Common served as a US Army Air Forces and later US Air Force airfield from the Second World War onwards\, becoming synonymous with the Cold War. Between 1982 and 1991\, it was home to the US Air Force’s 501st Tactical Missile Wing\, which operated 96 Ground Launched Cruise Missiles. The base also became internationally known for the Greenham Common Women’s Peace Camp and its anti-nuclear protests. \nToday\, few buildings from the former airbase remain. Greenham Control Tower is the only building open to the public as a visitor centre. As part of Heritage Open Days\, the charity that operates Greenham Control Tower has been granted special permission to open the Decontamination Suite within Building 274\, offering visitors a rare opportunity to explore an area that is not usually accessible. \nNormally closed to the public\, this remarkable facility is attached to the former command centre of the 501st Tactical Missile Wing. Built with blast-resistant reinforced concrete and heavy blast doors\, it was designed to protect personnel in the event of a chemical attack. The building also featured self-contained air\, water and sanitation systems\, allowing it to remain operational during an emergency. \nJoin expert guides for a rare opportunity to explore this fascinating Cold War facility and discover the history of a site that played an important part of Greenham Common’s history. \nLearn more via the link below.
