Life is not still - A florilegium of the Kennet and Avon Canal

“Life is not still” plays with the themes of Still Life as an art genre versus the unstoppable nature of time and changes throughout the year and seasons in this exhibition by Maria Harryman.

The lino prints, paintings and quilts on display find their inspiration in florilegium, books dating back to medieval times which recorded the plants of a particular place or garden. The illustrations were often more decorative in nature than herbals which focussed on scientific or medicinal characteristics. Harryman’s specific place of interest is the Kennet & Avon Canal.

By walking the towpath throughout the year she is able to observe, draw, collect and slowly record the flora before transposing them into designs for print, stitch and paint. She aims to share and elevate the beauty of the plants we find at our feet which many people consider weeds.

Work will be for sale alongside a book of illustrated poems which capture other elements and symbols of the canal with its layered stories of Industrial heritage and human life.

Runs Wed 20 Mar – Sun 14 Apr 2024. Please note: The Museum will be closed for an annual deep clean on Wednesday 27th & Thursday 28th March. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Our second floor galleries host a series of special exhibitions, along with Gallery 5 which can be hired to display original artwork, sculpture and crafts.

West Berkshire Museum is open from Wednesday to Sunday, 10am – 4pm.

Entry is free but donations are most welcomed https://www.westberkshireheritage.org/donation
