DESCRIPTION:Newbury Town Council\, in collaboration with local partners\, is proud to announce a programme of events to mark the 80th anniversary of VJ Day (Victory over Japan Day)\, commemorating the end of the Second World War and honouring those who served in the Far East. \nOn Friday 15th August at 11am\, a commemorative service will take place at Newbury’s War Memorial\, offering a time for the community to pay their respects to those who served and sacrificed during the conflict. All are welcome to attend. \nFollowing the service\, there will be a reception and exhibition in Newbury Town Hall\, featuring stories and memories from local people on the war in the Far East and its aftermath. \nAttendance for the reception and exhibition is free but must be booked in advance by emailing mayor@newbury.gov.uk. \nNewbury Royal British Legion will also be commemorating the 80th anniversary with a day of activities planned at their club on Pelican Lane.

DESCRIPTION:Newbury Town Hall is throwing open its doors to the public as part of this year’s Heritage Open Days Festival on Saturday 13 September 2025\, 10am to 2pm. \nThe public are invited to view the Council Chamber\, The Civic Staircase\, the Council’s maces and other civic regalia. This includes the Town Hall Honours Boards\, which list the Mayors of Newbury\, going back to 1596 and features many well-known local families. \nAlthough meetings in the Town Hall are open to the public\, and there are often coffee mornings and other community events in the Chamber\, many local people may not have taken the opportunity to visit the Chamber\, so this is a great opportunity to see it in person. \nThis event is FREE\, and all are welcome.

Visitors will have the opportunity to have a go at a range of Taster Workshops from avibrant programme of workshops (see link below for full details) and courses\, and add to a gigantic Doodle Wall! \nIt’s free to attend with free parking too\, with a suggested donation of £2 on the door which will go directly to The Base charity – supporting all the work they do out in the local community and within their colourful walls! \nThere will also be a free shuttle bus running between the Festival of Arts & Crafts and Creative Commons at the entrance to Greenham Common.
