DESCRIPTION:Newbury Road Club is kicking off its centenary celebrations with a look back at 100 years of local cycling history. \n\n\nThe Club will be previewing a forthcoming exhibition which brings its history to life through stories and pictures. Visitors can also contrast and compare 1925 and 2025 bikes and see historical artefacts from its rich history. \n\n\nNRC can trace its roots back to the 1870s but was officially formed in 1925. Throughout the decades it has fostered many cycling legends and championed the fitness aspect of cycling – even back in the days when cycling was the major mode of transport. \n\n\nThe Club has historically started its Club rides\, every week\, from the Town Hall  – normally meeting outside rather than in! \nEveryone is welcome to this free town centre event and cyclist’s staple fare (coffee and cake) will be provided. \n\nCan’t make it? Throughout 2025\, the club will be showcasing the best of cycling in Newbury and\, whether or not you are a cyclist\, there will be plenty of opportunity to come along and help us celebrate this major milestone.

DESCRIPTION:The Newbury Road Club centenary exhibition is underway at the West Berkshire Museum\, but cycle clubs have been busy in Newbury for many more years. \nDr David Portwood has been a club cyclist for nearly fifty years and a member of Newbury Road Club for over thirty. The last few years Dave has been researching the history of cycle clubs in Newbury as part of the centenary celebrations of the club in 2025. \nThis talk will give a short history of cycling clubs in Newbury with particular emphasis on the Newbury Road Club from its formation by the Bance brothers to the active and busy club it is today. \nEntry to the museum and the talk are free\, but you are requested to pre-book your seats via the link below. \nBookings close at 4pm the day before the talk.

DESCRIPTION:Newbury Town Council\, in collaboration with local partners\, is proud to announce a series of events to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE Day (Victory in Europe Day)\, marking this pivotal moment in history with a programme of activities that honour those who contributed to the end of the Second World War. \nThe events\, taking place from May 8th to May 10th\, will bring the community together to remember\, reflect\, and celebrate the legacy of those who served. \nThursday May 8th: VE Day 80 Commemorations \nAt 11am\, a service will be held at Newbury’s War Memorial to pay respects to the brave individuals who fought and sacrificed for freedom. \nFair Close Day Centre will be hosting a special VE Day Celebration lunch for over 65’s. Enjoy entertainment and fish and chips to celebrate the spirit of VE Day. Booking essential on 01635 40488 or email hello@fairclosecentre.org . \nFrom 7pm\, bring a picnic and join us in Victoria Park for a Beacon Lighting ceremony. As the beacon is lit at 9:30pm\, the community will reflect on the significance of VE Day\, a symbol of hope\, peace\, and unity.
