Suitable for beginners and those with some experience \nWhat to expect: In this 2.5 hour class you will make a beautiful two-dimensional sculpture of a swift to hang on the wall. Suitable for beginners and those with some experience\, Judith will give you an introduction to willow weaving. You will learn how to create the willow frame along with weaving techniques to bring your swift to life. \nWhat to bring/wear: All materials are included. \nBenefits: In this workshop you will be learning the traditional craft of willow weaving which not only creates a lasting functional or decorative item for you to take home to enjoy\, it also helps promote and celebrate this ancient heritage craft. As a hands on workshop\, working with this natural material is a great creative work out for your hands! \nAbout the artist: Judith Needham is a basket maker and willow weaver based in Farnham\, Surrey – England’s Craft Town. Judith specialises in woven willow playhouses but I also make baskets and teach basket making and willow sculpture. Judith enjoys passing on her skills through teaching workshops to adults and children at various venues across Surrey and Hampshire.

DESCRIPTION:Make a rainstick\, a ceremonial musical instrument for summoning rain\, from a cardboard tube\, foil\, wax discs and rice. Decorate with marker pens\, stickers and other craft materials. Once complete\, gently shake to hear and summon rain to help the plants to grow! \nAimed at 7-11 year olds\, but younger and older children are welcome. DESCRIPTION:Educafe runs a welcoming community café at Newbury Library every Wednesday from 11am-2pm. \nAnyone is welcome to head along for a free tea and cake in the Carnegie Room upstairs on the 1st floor of the library\, accessible by lift. \nEducafe was started to bring together the diverse communities of West Berkshire and aims to: \n\nProvide safe spaces to meet\, eat\, learn and make new friends.\nBring people together to create community spirit and cohesion.\nBreak down barriers and reduce health inequalities.\nImprove health and wellbeing of residents and access to local services.\nReduce isolation and loneliness and improve people’s mental health.\n\nDuring the opening hours you can also visit the Parent Village and meet others going through similiar parental experiences\, meet other like-minded creatives at Knit & Natter\, or take part in the Chatty Corner language support group which offers a warm and friendly welcome to all non-native speakers\, including asylum seekers and refugees. \nIn the Carnegie Room after the café is closed\, a drop-in seated exercise class takes place. A recommended £3 donation can be made to the teacher.

You are however welcome to take your own. \nHouse admission prices apply at Shaw House from 1 April. You can however choose just to pay to do the craft in the Hall. You can still access the gardens and cafe without paying admission.

DESCRIPTION:Learn the art of embossing onto foil with sculptor Flora Gare. \nYou will design your own butterfly wreath by tracing templates\, scoring and cutting the foil to attach to a copper ring. \nFlora is a sculptor inspired by the natural world. She uses copper wire to draw in space\, making delicate sculptures and wall based pieces that contrast the line of wire with the colour and fluidity of ink. \nWhat to expect: This is a great introduction to work working with wire. Guided by Flora\, you will explore handing wire and metal foil to design your own wreath. Using templates\, you will learn how to scoring\, cut and emboss the foil to attached to a copper ring that will create your butterfly wreath to take home. \nWhat to bring/wear: All materials provided. Bring a pair of pliers if you have them to hand. \nBenefits: Wire is a malleable and diverse material that allows you to experiment with different forms and shapes in a creative and spontaneous way. Being lightweight and durable\, it is a rewarding craft that you can grow and develop if you wish to explore you explore the medium further.
