DESCRIPTION:Heritage Open Days is England’s largest festival of history and culture. It’s your chance to see hidden places and try out new experiences – and it’s all free. \nThe public are invited to view the Council Chamber\, The Civic Staircase\, The Town Hall portraits\, the Council’s maces and other civic regalia. This includes the Town Hall Honours Boards\, which list the Mayors of Newbury\, going back to 1596 and features many well-known local families. \nAlthough meetings in the Town Hall are open to the public\, and there are often coffee mornings and other community events in the Chamber\, it appears there are still a lot of Newbury people who have not visited the Chamber. \nThe open day coincides with a return of King Charles I to Newbury after 343 years\, to commemorate the eve of the First Battle of Newbury. \nThe event is FREE\, including refreshments\, and all are welcome.

SUMMARY:King Charles I returns to Newbury
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday 19th September\, Charles I returns to Newbury after 383 years to mark the day before the fateful First Battle of Newbury. \nHead along to Newbury Market Place where the Newbury Town Cryer will be heralding the King’s return to Newbury\, and you’ll have the chance to meet King Charles I\, Queen Mary\, and Royalist and Parliamentarian troops\, all be dressed in accurate period clothing. \nThe event is being put on by reenactors from The Marquess of Winchester Regiment\, English Civil War Society and the Essex Regiment\, who will be eager to share details on what happened in Newbury on the eve of the biggest Civil War battle in the south of England. \nThe actors will arrive at 10:45am in Newbury Market Place\, before heading to Empire Cafe and then Griffins Butchers. After\, they will make their way around the town centre\, with opportunities for photos\, before returning to Newbury Town Hall at 11:45am. At 12pm Parliamentarian troops will be speaking to the Mayor outside Newbury Town Hall\, before the King and Queen arrive with a Royalist officer to arrest them! \nThe event coincides with Newbury Town Hall being open to the public from 10am-2pm as part of the national Heritage Open Days campaign.

DESCRIPTION:Heritage Open Days is England’s largest festival of history and culture. It’s your chance to see hidden places and try out new experiences – and it’s all free. \nTake a guided tour of the Cold War Decontamination Suite at the former US Airbase. This rare opportunity offers access to a normally closed part of the site\, with knowledgeable guides sharing the history and stories behind this unique building. \nGreenham Common served as a US Army Air Forces and later US Air Force airfield from the Second World War onwards\, becoming synonymous with the Cold War. Between 1982 and 1991\, it was home to the US Air Force’s 501st Tactical Missile Wing\, which operated 96 Ground Launched Cruise Missiles. The base also became internationally known for the Greenham Common Women’s Peace Camp and its anti-nuclear protests. \nToday\, few buildings from the former airbase remain. Greenham Control Tower is the only building open to the public as a visitor centre. As part of Heritage Open Days\, the charity that operates Greenham Control Tower has been granted special permission to open the Decontamination Suite within Building 274\, offering visitors a rare opportunity to explore an area that is not usually accessible. \nNormally closed to the public\, this remarkable facility is attached to the former command centre of the 501st Tactical Missile Wing. Built with blast-resistant reinforced concrete and heavy blast doors\, it was designed to protect personnel in the event of a chemical attack. The building also featured self-contained air\, water and sanitation systems\, allowing it to remain operational during an emergency. \nJoin expert guides for a rare opportunity to explore this fascinating Cold War facility and discover the history of a site that played an important part of Greenham Common’s history. \nLearn more via the link below.
