December 2 marks the eleventh Small Business Saturday to date, a nationwide initiative providing a much-needed spotlight on local businesses. Small businesses have occasionally been overlooked in favour of larger high-street brands, this weekend Newbury Business Improvement District (BID) who are the not-for-profit organisation behind Visit Newbury, is asking shoppers to explore their local independents and support their local shop owners. The goal is to shine a spotlight on the incredible array of products and services offered by Newbury’s small businesses, from boutique shops to cozy cafes and everything in . This week you will also find Small Business Saturday inspiration in a series of Christmas guide posts on Facebook and Instagram, including a guide to stocking fillers.

Whilst Christmas is typically the busiest time of year for many traders, tough economic conditions throughout the year have meant that many businesses are needing more support. Newbury BID has extended its offer of two, free, market pitches to local small business or Independent business owners throughout west Berkshire who are keen to try out commercial trading in Newbury town centre, at Newbury’s incredibly popular Artisan Market. Hosted on Northbrook Street, the Newbury Artisan Market draws in thousands of visitors each month and is sure to raise the profile of any business wanting a pitch. The market’s next appearance will be for the festive Christmas Edition Artisan Market December 16 and 17.

Alison Drummond Newbury BID’s Operations Manager commented: ‘we work hard to support all of our small businesses, and business owners, they make up the backbone of Newbury’s fantastic community, initiatives like these are so important and therefore we are keen for other like-minded businesses throughout all of West Berkshire to dip their toe into trading in Newbury town centre.’

Newbury’s town centre sets itself apart in comparison to other shopping destinations in the UK, as a historical market town it has attracted a mix of boutique-style shops full of gems to be uncovered alongside usual high-street favourites. With unique gifts, homeware, clothing, foodie treats to name a few, Newbury’s Indies have a whole lot to offer – so don’t miss out on this Small Business Saturday!

For a full list of businesses in Newbury’s town centre and to learn about upcoming events please go to visitnewbury.org.uk, or visit visitnewbury.org.uk/unwrap-newbury to learn more about Christmas in Newbury. You can also find out more by following @visitnewbury on your social media channels.

If you are a small business or Independent business within West Berkshire and would like to enquire about a free market pitch please e-mail info@newburybid.co.u

Newbury Business Improvement District (BID), the organisation behind Visit Newbury, has announced a thrilling free experience for families this October half term: the Ghost Town Shop Trail.

Newbury, a town steeped in history, is home to many eerie tales. In the Market Place, the ghost of Thomas Barrie forever moans, punished for treason by having his ears removed. Nearby, The Catherine Wheel pub harbours a mischievous poltergeist who likes to pull hair and throw glasses.

From 25 to 28 October, some of Newbury’s most beloved shops around Bartholomew Street will embrace this spooky past, being transformed into hauntingly delightful destinations for children to trick or treat as they hunt for Halloween posters in shop windows.

The trail features 10 fantastic local independent businesses, including The Goan Caff, The Freakshow, The Dolphin, Willow & Blooms, Salon 46, Hethertons Bakery, La La Vintage, TaxAssist Accountants, The Ugly Duckling, and The Rufus Coffee House.

Visit Newbury recommends kicking off at the Kennet Centre, where you’ll be ready to take on the street for trick or treating, with each shop will offer chocolates and sweets to celebrate the spooky season. Costumes are encouraged!

The event will also offer a number of offers and prizes including Lego Star Wars sets – did you know Star Wars have filmed just up the road at Greenham Common? Other spine-chillingly good prizes up for grabs include Vue Cinema family vouchers and a Nandos family meal voucher, so be sure not to miss out!

This event aims to provide a safe and enjoyable trick-or-treating experience for families seeking accessible and engaging activities for their children over the half-term break.

The Ghost Town Shop Trail offers a comfortable alternative for families looking to experience the joy of trick-or-treating without worrying about knocking on unfamiliar doors. In a year where safety is paramount, Visit Newbury says it’s keen to facilitate a festive Halloween event that combines the joys of community engagement with peace of mind.

Alison Drummond, Operations Manager at Newbury BID, added: “We can’t wait for the Ghost Town Shop Trail in October. With some fantastic local businesses involved, fun prizes and, of course, chocolate up for grabs, the four-day event promises to be great and provide a great showcase for our much loved Independents down in Bartholomew Street – otherwise unofficially known as the Southern Quarter!”

Visit Newbury’s Halloween events include the Ghost Town Shop Trail, a Halloween themed fright-night Psycho Path Pub Trail, and a Spooktakular Window Competition where town-centre businesses are encouraged to dress up their windows as part of the Halloween festivities.

Families wanting to get involved should stroll down Bartholomew Street and the surrounding areas between the 25 and 28 of October. The participating shops will be visibly marked, making it easy for families to plot their Halloween adventure.

To find out more about the free Ghost Town Shop Trial, sign up for your trail card and read the Terms & Conditions, head to the Visit Newbury website: https://visitnewbury.org.uk/

Newbury, August 15, 2023 – The moonlit magic of the Festival of the Moon has officially graced Newbury’s town centre, commencing its captivating three-week journey on Tuesday, August 15th. This highly anticipated festival comprises an array of over 100 lunar-inspired family and community events set to unfold throughout the town.

Visitors across all generations lined up outside Corn Exchange auditorium to experience the first viewings of the festival’s centrepiece attraction, the awe-inspiring “Museum of the Moon” – a breathtaking creation created by acclaimed UK artist Luke Jerram.

This six-meter diameter masterpiece, accurately scaled at 1:600,000, bathes the surroundings in a celestial glow, meticulously crafted using satellite imagery from NASA. The installation comes to life accompanied by an immersive surround sound composition by the BAFTA-winning composer Dan Jones.

In the words of Jessica Jhundoo-Evans, Director of the Corn Exchange, “It’s incredibly impressive, amazing and awe-inspiring. I’ve just walked in and seen it for the first time. I’m really excited to be working with Visit Newbury and hopefully thousands of people will come and see it over the next three weeks.”

Organized by Visit Newbury, the Festival of the Moon expands upon this showpiece installation with local businesses hosting over 100 moon-themed events between 15 August and 3 September. This enchanting festival boasts an eclectic range of activities, from enlightening educational talks to serene health sessions like yoga and tai chi under the moonlit sky. Additionally, lunar-themed markets and immersive art workshops provide diverse experiences for all visitors.

Newbury BID chairman and The Catherine Wheel landlord Warwick Heskins said: “The whole point of [the festival] is to drive football into Newbury. There are 30,000 tickets available to come see the Museum of the Moon, plus over 100 separate events all round town, so just think about the extra number of visitors that’s going to bring into Newbury. If everyone who comes in pops into a restaurant, a coffee shop, goes into the shops beforehand, the extra income this will bring in to the Newbury economy will be fantastic.”

For a comprehensive list of festival events and further information, please visit the Visit Newbury website at https://visitnewbury.org.uk/festival-of-the-moon/.
